Alchemist was released in 1983 for the ZX Spectrum 48K. Published by Imagine Software Ltd, the game was developed by Ian Weatherburn, who handled the code and design, alongside in-game graphics artist Paul Lindale and musician Fred Gray.
This single-player arcade adventure supports Cursor, Kempston, and Interface 2 joystick controls. Notably, the game's memory contains unused code fragments from Stonkers, a remnant of the tape duplication process used by the publisher.
The original cassette price was £5.5. The title was developed exclusively for the ZX Spectrum platform.
The game received an average magazine score of 80.83%. It earned a PCG Hit award from Personal Computer Games and achieved an 85% rating in Crash magazine.
In Russia, the game gained recognition through multiple TR-DOS adaptations and a Russian translation by L.S.D.'93 and Ershsoft. Local magazines frequently featured POKE codes to assist players. Cracked cassette versions were also available.
