Beta Basic is a programming language extension for the ZX Spectrum, released in 1983 by the British publisher Betasoft. The software was developed by Andrew Wright.
This utility provides advanced programming features for a single user, significantly expanding the capabilities of the standard BASIC interpreter. It introduces new commands for structural programming and efficient screen attribute manipulation, making it a powerful tool for software development.
The original cassette for Beta Basic 1 cost £11, while version 3 was priced at £14.95, and version 4 at £15.95.
The software received critical acclaim, earning a score of 9/10 in both reviews published by Sinclair User magazine.
Beta Basic gained significant popularity among users in Russia and the former Soviet Union. It was widely documented in local technical literature and magazines like ZX Format. Several versions of the language were adapted for TR-DOS to enable disk-based operations, and localized Russian versions were also available to the community.
