Hercules was released in 1986 for the ZX Spectrum 48K. The game was published by Alpha-Omega Software and developed by John A. White and Ayyaz Mahmood. Phil Gascoine and Tim White contributed the inlay and poster art for the release.
As an arcade platformer, the game allows for up to two players. It supports controls via cursor keys, Kempston joystick, or Interface 2. Beyond the ZX Spectrum, the title was also ported to the BBC Micro, Commodore 64, Commodore Plus/4, and Acorn platforms.
The original cassette version was priced at £1.99. Critical reception was mixed, with Sinclair User awarding it 2/5 and Your Sinclair giving it a score of 3/10. However, the game received the ZX Computing Globert award in the January 1987 issue of ZX Computing.
In the USSR and Russia, the game was known by its full title, Hercules: Slayer of the Damned. It saw numerous TR-DOS adaptations released by various groups, such as Oleg Klauson, Andy Solovarov, and TAW. Cracked cassette versions of the game were also widely circulated.
