Elite Systems released the arcade vehicle combat game Overlander in 1988 for the ZX Spectrum. The development team included game designer Simon Cooke, programmer Mark Haigh-Hutchinson, and artist Gary Tonge, who handled both in-game graphics and the loading screen.
The game offers a single-player combat driving experience. It features support for AY sound and allows players to use either a Kempston joystick or fully redefinable keyboard controls.
The original cassette version was priced at £7.99, while the disk release cost £12.99. In addition to the ZX Spectrum, the title was ported to the Amstrad CPC, Commodore 64, Amiga, and Atari ST platforms.
Overlander received an average magazine score of 78.67%. Notably, Your Sinclair awarded it the Megagame status in their October 1988 issue.
The game was widely played in the Soviet Union, as evidenced by over a dozen TR-DOS conversions and several independent Russian-language translations. Magazines such as Faultless and Micro frequently featured POKE codes for the game. Additionally, various cracked cassette versions were released by local scene groups.
