Phantis arrived in 1987 for the ZX Spectrum 48K. It was published by the Spanish company Dinamic Software, with Carlos Abril handling the code and in-game graphics, and Javier Cubedo contributing both graphics and music. The striking inlay and poster art were crafted by Alfonso Azpiri and Luis Royo.
The game is a single-player arcade action title featuring side-view 2D graphics. The mechanics utilize both horizontal scrolling and flip-screen transitions. It supports Kempston joystick controls and features beeper music throughout the experience.
The original retail price was 875 Ptas. Beyond the ZX Spectrum version, Phantis was released for several other platforms, including Amstrad CPC, Commodore 64, MSX, and Atari ST.
The game holds an average magazine score of 66.76%. Critics from publications like Crash, Sinclair User, and Your Sinclair provided scores ranging from 60% to 82%, while the title later achieved a weighted user score of 8.41.
In the USSR and Russia, the game became widely known due to numerous cracked cassette releases and over a dozen TR-DOS adaptations. Magazines such as Revival and Micro frequently featured POKE codes for the game, while its title often appeared in discussions regarding custom loaders and studio retrospectives.
