The game is a single-player arcade shoot-em-up. It features AY sound, border effects, and multi-directional scrolling within a 2D side-view perspective, with the gameplay area occupying less than 50% of the screen. Controls are flexible, supporting Kempston and Interface 2 joysticks, cursor keys, and redefinable keys. A unique multi-loader feature allows players to enjoy a Master Mind game while the main program loads.
Rescate Atlantida was also ported to the Amstrad CPC and MSX platforms. The Spectrum +3 disk version includes additional AY music composed by Jose Antonio Martin Tello.
