The Champ was released in 1985 for the ZX81 platform. The game was created by Martin Warner and published by EMAP Business & Computer Publications.

It is a solo arcade beat-em-up designed for a single player. The title was developed specifically for the 16K version of the ZX81, focusing on direct combat mechanics.

In Russia and the former Soviet Union, the game was not widely known. It was adapted for TR-DOS by Andy Chernikov, and a cracked cassette version was distributed by Muaddib of E.S.I.
